Trier

Our next trip was to Trier. The oldest city in Germany. With an over 2000 year old history. In 16 B.C., this city was founded by Rome as Augusta Treverorium and serve as Rome's remote western capital for Great Britian and Gaul.

Here is the Porta Nigra, translated to "Black Gate"

You may recall the gate to Mordor in "The Lord of the Rings" was also called the Black Gate.

This is me and Lolo standing at the Porta Nigra. This is the largest of the Roman gates. And was once part of a four mile long wall built around the city in about 180 A.D. It was built with 6 ton sandstone blocks and instead of mortar to hold it up, they used metal clamps.
